April 2015 - The highest top station in the Alps is getting a new modern ropeway. The 3S gondola lift from LEITNER ropeways will be the world’s highest, and the ride to the Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) at an altitude of nearly 4,000 meters will be significantly faster and more comfortable. For the first time, the new upscale gondolas styled by Pininfarina, designer of famous brands such as Ferrari and Maserati, will be employed, using modern shapes as well as seats inspired by the automotive sector as well as large-scale panoramic windows. After a three-year construction time, the new ropeway will significantly improve the connection between the Swiss and Italian sides while ensuring year-round operation at the Matterhorn. The winter sports paradise surrounding the Matterhorn, with 360 kilometers of ski slopes, is considered one of the best developed and largest ski resorts in the world. The Matterhorn glacier paradise top station occupies an important strategic position precisely due to the connection of the slopes on the northern side above Zermatt with the downhill runs on the Italian side at Breuil-Cervinia.
“The price/performance ratio and innovative drive technology were decisive criteria for us. With the additional 3S system, we can increase capacity, reduce waiting times and have the additional advantage that the ropeway is less susceptible to winds”Sandra Stockinger, Head of Marketing and Sales at Zermatt Bergbahnen AG
