It will be a weekend full of spectacular ski racing on La Villa’s legendary Gran Risa slope. But it will also be a weekend for honoring successful partnerships and traditions. As skiers race down the slopes on December 20 and 21, 2015, Alta Badia will be celebrating 30 years of World Cup skiing competitions in this famous region in the heart of the Dolomites. As a partner of the ski resort for almost 70 years and a leading ropeway manufacturer, the South Tyrol-based company LEITNER ropeways has a key role to play in this. This winter will see the opening of yet another
ultra-modern ropeway, connecting La Villa with San Cassiano and the downhill run from Piz Sorega. There are therefore plenty of reasons to celebrate in the “LEITNER ropeways VIP Lounge.”
It is one of the classic events in the Alpine Ski World Cup and has earned a reputation for its intense, stadium-like atmosphere on the steep Gran Risa slope in La Villa: The Giant Slalom on December 20 is one of the most important races on the World Cup circuit. The racing also continues in the afternoon, when sporting legends from the past such as Gustav Thöni, Marc Girardelli, Michael von Grünigen, and former racing driver and Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi pit themselves against top athletes from the Sportgruppe für Körperbehinderte Südtirol (a South Tyrolean sports group for people with physical disabilities) in the “Ski Challenge of the Giants.” The Men’s Parallel Giant Slalom will take place under the floodlights on December 21. In addition to these sporting highlights, the ski resort is marking 30 years of World Cup ski competitions in Alta Badia with an attractive program of supporting events offering plenty of music and entertainment. The “LEITNER ropeways VIP Lounge”, which made a successful debut in 2014, is situated right in the finish area, making it one of the most sought-after spots for spectators at these World Cup races. This year, too, guests can once again enjoy some top-quality South Tyrolean cuisine. On Sunday, December 20, they will be treated to dishes created by two famous chefs, each with two Michelin stars to his name: Gerhard Wieser from Restaurant Trenkerstube in Tirolo and Martin Obermarzoner from Restaurant Jasmin in Chiusa. Then on Monday, December 21, Gottfried Messner from Restaurant Braunwirt in Val Sarentino will indulge them with the finestSouth Tyrolean specialties.
The Alta Badia ski region, which has been one of the top resorts in theAlpsfor many years, has a long-standing partnership with LEITNER ropeways. The fruits of this relationship include the new ropeway, which is almost 800 meters long and spans a vertical distance of 210 meters, linking La Villa and San Cassiano and providing a direct connection to the red downhill run at Piz Sorega. The automated detachable six-seater La Fraina chairlift replaces a fixed four-seater version and features state-of-the-art technology in the form of the LEITNER ropeways DirectDrive – the first of its kind in the world. With a transport capacity of 2,400 people per hour, the new ropeway will improve the transport service in this part of the resort and help to reduce waiting times even further.
The new ropeway marks another milestone in a partnership that has now lasted for almost 70 years. It began in 1947 with the construction of Italy’s very first chairlift, which ran up to Col Alt near Corvara. Back then, a LEITNER engine was used as the drive system. Together with the Skicarosello Corvara consortium, which was made up of ropeway companies Grandi Funivie Alta Badia S.p.A., Sciovie Pralongia S.p.A., Sciovie Ladinia S.p.A., Funivie del Boè S.p.A. and Seggiovie Sompunt S.p.A., LEITNER has since provided many more ropeways over the decades. Thanks to creative innovations and a high-quality range of tourist services, Alta Badia has developed into an absolutely first-rate winter sports destination. “Right from the start, Skicarosello was a pioneer with great vision, driven by the courage to be innovative. We see ourselves as partners. We have overcome challenges together, which has strengthened our bond. This is a partnership in which we help and learn from each other,” says Anton Seeber, a member of the Board of the LEITNER Group, commenting on the successful partnership.
